CM Punk Removed From AEW World Championship: Just five nights after capturing the AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing pay-per-view in Las Vegas, CM Punk announced that he had an injury that would require surgery.
Punk appeared live on Friday’s “Stampede” to make the announcement.
“When I got here earlier today, I headed to the arena and every bone in my body was screaming at me to turn around and go home and hug my wife and Larry [my dog],” Punk began. “And when I say every bone in my body, I mean broken bones too. But my mind told me to stay, and my gut told me that everyone here deserves an explanation – That’s why I am here.
“Since I set foot here in All Elite Wrestling, I told you I’ll give you my all until the wheels fall off. I got good news and bad news. Which do you want first?”
Punk continued, “The last thing I ever want to feel is that I’m disappointing any of you. The last thing I ever wanted to do was make you feel disappointed. So I hope That till now, I haven’t made you feel that way.
“I’ve loved every single second in this ring, every time I’ve been in this ring in front of you all I never thought I’d be able to experience again.”
Punk revealed that he needed surgery to repair the injury.
“So, here’s the bad news – I’m injured and I need surgery. A couple things have broken. The biggest is my heart because I love nothing more than to perform for you all, and I’m a Wanted to go to hell of the run. That’s bad news.
“The good news is, I can still do all that. I told you I was going to go on until the wheels fell off, and the wheels are still there, they haven’t fallen. It’s just that.” That one of them breaks. I’m back from worse, I’ve felt better than I did today, but I’m also here to tell you that I felt so bad.”
Punk referred to the situation as “a bump in the road” before taking over AEW’s talented youth roster. He said that he did not want to stop the company and would give up the title. In the end, Punk promises to be back bigger, faster, stronger and hungrier than ever. You can watch the full promo segment below.
AEW later announced that an interim AEW World Champion would be crowned. A battle royal will be held on Wednesday’s “Dynamite”, with the winner going on to face #1 ranked contender Jon Moxley later that night. The winner of that match will go on to compete for the interim AEW World Championship at the Forbidden Door pay-per-view on June 26.
